A hot and dry vintage, yet relaxed and captivating. It’s time for a new classicism in Bordeaux.
In mid-April 2026, we were in Bordeaux, during the preview week, to taste and review over 150 Bordeaux 2025 En Primeur wines.
The system allows for a first, in-depth look at this rich, incisive, and decidedly engaging vintage.
The 2025 vintage in Bordeaux is a beautiful year and speaks of a new classicism thanks to the extremely high quality across the board and the clearly discernible nuances among the different producers and winegrowing areas.
The most sincere and immediate conclusion from WinesCritic.com is that the wines produced in 2025 do not fully reflect the description of the vintage.
The vintage was indeed hot and dry, but the wines we tasted are harmonious, well-balanced, with moderate alcohol levels, often around 13.5°/14°, ideal values that have been long-awaited in recent years.
The climate trend for the 2025 vintage

Longing for summer in Bordeaux.
The 2025 vintage began with a mild winter without any significant weather events. The millimeters of rainfall were slightly lower than the average for the last 10 years. Budbreak in spring occurred 5 to 7 days earlier than in the extraordinary 2000 vintage, making it an early-starting vintage.
There were no weather events in spring that worried the winemakers, and vine management was also well controlled thanks to the limited rainfall, averaging about 60 mm compared to the 100 mm estimated from 2000 to 2024.
The hot and dry climate continued into summer, between May and July; Only 75 mm of rain fell, less than half the average for the same period from 2000 to 2024.
In August, the two central weeks from the 4th to the 17th, the 2025 vintage was the hottest in the last 25 years, and perhaps more. Average temperatures exceeded 35°C, to be precise, reaching 35.7°C, thus surpassing even the 2003 vintage, the historical European benchmark for one of the hottest vintages ever recorded.
A vintage that on paper appears decidedly dry and hot actually yielded very interesting results in the cellar. With great tact and a fresh vision of the final product, the wines tasted in preview shone with their own light, boasting great balance on the palate and flavor.
How was this possible?
The key lies in a combination of factors that brought gentleness and grace to the wines. The warm and dry spring naturally reduced yields from the vines, which had already weakened from the previous vintage, 2024, a difficult year for agronomists.
With lighter vines, it was easier to deal with the drought, which, moreover, lasted from winter until the end of August, causing less concern and thus less tension and stress to the vines.
The late August rain (August 28-September 2) lowered temperatures and brought brightness and freshness to the grapes, which limited the degradation of the natural acids present in the berries and lowered the sugar concentration, which was quite high in late August.
At the same time, however, the late August rain did not dilute the material. It penetrated perfectly into the turgid and rich grapes and allowed them to swell in the cellar, lowering alcohol production and ensuring more elegant and balanced wines.
The Merlot was harvested shortly after the rains ended. At that point, the grapes were fully ripe and rich in polyphenols, and the only concerns were possible mold growth and increased sugar synthesis in the berries.
At that point, the advance compared to other vintages (the 2022 vintage being very early) was reduced to about three days, with the Merlot harvested in the first week of September and the Cabernets between September 12-13 and approximately September 20.
Reading the 2025 vintage through the eyes of the producer
There have been many positive testimonials from producers drawn to this vintage, which will not be easily forgotten for more than one reason.
One of the most powerful messages is certainly the one from Nicolas Audebert, winemaker and production manager of Château Canon, Berliquet, and Chateau Rauzan-Ségla: “It’s time to move away from the firm belief that the greatness of the vintage is all that matters. In this modern era, the vintage should no longer be seen and interpreted as a sign of quality; the vintage is a sign of style. The only thing that matters is the attitude, rigor, and quality standards of a winery that each year puts in the utmost effort to create the best possible expression of the vintage.”
For Julien Viaud, of Laboratoire Rolland & Associés, “the 2025 vintage is grand, classic, approachable in drinkability, enjoyable, and delicious. We must stop constantly thinking and writing about whether or not this new vintage will be the next milestone of the century, and instead appreciate the beauty of the present by understanding its depth. We can only be proud of such a vintage in the midst of this economic crisis.”
According to Axel Marchal, of the Institute of Vine and Wine Science, “the vintage is perfectly balanced with beautiful acidity. Despite the heat, the pH values are interesting; in nature, not all things are as they seem, and terroir certainly played a fundamental role.”
According to Eric Boissenot of Laboratoire Boissenot Lamarque, “the vintage is classic with a vibrant profile. It has a strong tannic structure but no harshness. The only disappointment is the quantity; we’re generally accustomed to seeing greater quantities in interesting vintages like 2025.”
For Axel Heinz, managing director at Château Lascombes in Margaux, the vintage can be summarized as a vintage rich in light and Mediterranean energy, culminating in a fresh, oceanic finish. According to Heinz, at his third harvest in Margaux: “This vintage is more reminiscent of classic vintages like 2005 and 2010 rather than those that experienced a hot and dry season.”
The vintage was a positive surprise for many winemakers, winemakers, and consultants and represents a new classicism based on personality, a modern interpretation of the vintage, and attention to detail. To avoid overextracting the grapes. Among the most frequently used adjectives describing this vintage were:
Vibrant, Energetic, Refined, Classy, a Must Have!
WinesCritic.com’s 2025 vintage review
The 2025 vintage arrives at a very particular time in history.
The vintage is both important from a media perspective and perfectly balanced, easily understood by many professionals, sommeliers, and collectors. Yields were low, a positive factor that helps align the product with the unfortunately weak demand of recent years.

The 2025 vintage stands out for its modern balance, with low natural alcohol levels that help convey the terroir and winemaking processes, making the wines naturally enjoyable without frills. This vintage is rightfully among WinesCritic.com’s favorites. Among the great vintages tasted since WinesCritic.com’s inception, it certainly shares a qualitative tie with the 2020 vintage, which embodies the hallmarks of beauty and flavor balance, harmony, depth, and Mediterranean character.
The 2025 vintage represents a keystone in the winemaking landscape of great oenological expressions. The wines are hedonistic, fragrant, ethereal, and tangible at the same time. The lower alcohol content provides a delightful insight into the terroir.
The classicism of Saint-Émilion dominates our ranking, along with the elegance of a truly impressive Pavie Macquin. Saint-Estèphe was awarded the second-best wine tasted, tied with another Saint-Émilion. Phélan Segur and Destieux, respectively, rounded out the top three.
Beautiful expressions of the vintage arrived in this round of tastings from Clos Fourtet, Château Canon, Lascombes, and Beychevelle.
