Preview tasting of 150 wines
We return to the Langhe to taste the 2022 Barolo vintage. It was a pleasant surprise and, in our opinion, a good vintage of medium depth, exceeding expectations.
For the first time, we were guests of the Consortium in the Council Room. Over 150 2022 Barolos were tasted, allowing us to gain an in-depth understanding of the vintage.

Slightly worried by a year that was both hot and dry, we were immediately proven wrong after the first “battery” of wines.
This vintage saw more sunshine than heat, and rarely any wines with overripe notes, unwanted drying, or herbaceous, tight tannins.
The 2022 Barolos are pleasant, relaxed, and easy to read. We might even dare to say they’re immediate, as far as Barolo goes.
We appreciated the stylistic precision and cleanliness of the wines, which displayed pulp, good texture, and high quality right from the start.
They are frontal wines, opening up well on the palate and making composed sweetness their main strength.
They are balanced and flavorful and entice you to sip, but they’re by no means predictable or banal; we had some truly pleasant surprises during the tasting.
They won’t have the depth and refinement of some of the great vintages we’ve become accustomed to (2019, 2021), but they could hold their own even in 8-10 years.
An intense week that led us to taste over 200 wines, including Nebbiolo and Nebbiolo from Barolo and Barbaresco, as well as Freisa, Pelaverga, and Barbera. Nine wineries visited in four days, including one new visit and many repeat visits.

There’s a wonderful generational turnover in Barolo; at almost all the wineries we visited in this round of tastings, we were delighted to learn of the arrival of very young people.
They are often young family members who have recently completed their studies but are already excited to take over an important legacy.
“This vintage comes after three truly excellent years (2019, 2020, 2021) and has forced winemakers to be very present in the vineyard and make important decisions.” This was the comment of Alberto Cordero di Montezemolo, winemaker and owner of the eponymous family winery located in La Morra.
We immediately noticed a winter devoid of snow and bad weather, but rather filled with sunshine and beautiful days. This was the first wake-up call that allowed us to make decisions right from the pruning stage. We returned to the vineyard, after having already pruned, to shorten the Guyot by a bud or two and leave a lighter load on the plants to support throughout the season. Furthermore, among the choices we made, we only carried out one topping (in some vineyards it wasn’t even necessary) and we chose to cut the turf more frequently to prevent even a small amount of grass from depleting the soil’s water supply.
The 2022 Climate Trend
2022 saw a generally warm and sunny winter, following a 2021 with moderate average temperatures but little rainfall. This undoubtedly accelerated the onset of the stress phase the vines were already experiencing in late May/June.
Early budbreak and rapid growth in the initial phase gave way to a significant slowdown in the vines after flowering. The summer was decidedly hot (average 27°C) and extremely dry. Very little rain merely moistened the surface but was not enough to hydrate the vines. This was the driest year in the last 70 years, with 311 mm of rainfall from April to October.
Small berries, thick skins, and little pulp were the challenges faced by Barolo producers, who harvested largely earlier than in previous years but within a fairly broad window from September 13-14 to early October.
The best wines tasted
Some producers confirmed their preference not to release their Cru wines in the 2022 vintage. This doesn’t mean it’s a poor-quality vintage, Alberto Cordero di Montezemolo and Fabio Alessandria di Burlotto are keen to point out. The main reason was the lack of significant nuances in the different Cru wines, combined with the limited production, which in some cases saw a 20-25% decrease due to the dry vintage. Therefore, in their case, they will release only Barolo Monfalletto and Barolo Classico, a decision shared by several producers and absolutely understandable.

We like to think that the 2022 vintage is balanced on the palate and can remain so for years to come, thanks to the ongoing drought that began very early. The vines immediately felt the need to react, working with minimal leaves to avoid evapotranspiration and synthesizing the most useful elements for the propagation of the grape variety. Furthermore, the ratio of thick skin to minimal pulp will help the material remain stable over time. The alcohol content of the wines, despite their young age, was never alarming and often remained around 14.5%.
Among the expressions that most impressed us were Via Nuova by Pira Chiara Boschis and Serra dei Turchi by Poderi Gianni Gagliardo.

Two wines that have already accustomed us to great things, but in this warm vintage they have truly enhanced themselves with intriguing and impressive nuances. A tie for quality comes with Aeroplanservaj by Domenico Clerico and Le Vigne di Sandrone, equally complex wines with excellent harmony and interpretation. Wines reviewed for the first time also find space and are worthy of note. The expressions produced by Scarzello and Josetta Saffirio are splendid, transparent wines with great interpretation and pleasant dynamism.

The 2022 vintage has impressed us positively and comes at a time when the 2019 and 2020 vintages are still available on the market, which certainly need more time to be understood and fully enjoyed. This vintage could help Barolo producers tap into new consumers by offering them a more fragrant and captivating version of Barolo that can be enjoyed immediately without long waits.
